Introducing Rosabel Agbayani - Region 8 Area RepI am excited to be a part of the CA Hands & Voices team representing Region 8. I live in a small suburb of San Diego called Rancho Penasquitos. Growing up as a Navy family I have lived in Florida, Hawaii, Japan, and Los Angeles. We traveled extensively while stationed oversees and my dad was always a fan of road trips. For this reason...I continuously have the bug for traveling! I believe there is a world out there waiting to be discovered!
Our journey as a DHH family started in 2010 when my son was three. His diagnosis came amidst a time when I was also raising both teenage daughter and a 6 month old infant. To this day...I don't know how I managed to do it but somehow it was done. Michael is now 10 years old and mainstreamed at our local public school, my eldest Arianna (22) is currently a Music Therapy student at Cal State Northridge, and Dannica my youngest (7) has been my sidekick throughout this journey reminding me how sweet and fun loving life can be. Michael doesn't LOVE school but he is a hard worker and does well. He loves socializing with his friends (DHH and Hearing alike) and playing baseball. He has become his own advocate...and he is my biggest supporter!
The one thing that I have learned amidst the joys and pains of raising a DHH child is the importance of building a solid network of people who can support you through your journey. This is why I believe it is important to have an organization like California Hands & Voices to help navigate through systems and understand the multiple individualistic needs of a Deaf and Hard of Hearing child. There is no "Magic Bullet" for understanding...it is a toolbox of knowledge that you continuously have to build, use what you need when you need it, and put away to save for a rainy day. That is why I trust in the mission of Hands & Voices and that it is important to respect and honor a family's choice when it comes to giving DHH children the opportunity to lead happy, healthy, and productive lives.
Currently, I work at Rady Children's Hospital San Diego as a Clinical Research Coordinator. I have a Master's in Public Health and graduated with degrees in Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education from Utah State University (2013), Human Development from Cal State San Marcos (2002), and Liberal Arts from Miramar Community College (1998). However, I truly believe that my BEST and most important education comes from my DHH child and family who have taught me that no matter what...everything is going to be okay!
I look forward to serving on the board by sharing and expanding my knowledge working with families through CA H&V. Thank you...it is truly an honor to serve the community!
